The Murton counter stands at 1 now (it's great to tie the record but you should really beat it). This is a fantastic achievement in his first year in Japanese baseball and coupled with 88 RBIs shows a very fine batter. Now let's hope the Swallows do not walk him every at bat but actually give him a chance to hit (Aoki is still also active in the chase). On the subject of Toritani moving to lead off, this is a puzzling move but seems to be working at the moment. Maybe Mayumi felt that he was getting stale but it seems a bit strange. Mayumi will be back next year, not a prospect that fills one with joy but if Tigers can secure a decent rotation and Egusa and Johjima can learn to live together Tigers might actually win the pennant. They will have to decide on a suitable role for Kanemoto though - given Arai's performance in the No. 4 slot Kanemoto would be a mistake at that position. Imai apart from the first had handled the second and third pretty competently but then started Tigers fourth with a hit to Arai. Next was Kanemoto who got hold of a loose pitch and dropped it nicely into the right centre stand for a two run home run 3-0 Tigers. This, I believe, is his first home run at Mazda Stadium. Arai followed with a ground out to end the innings. Maru led off Carp's seventh with a hit but this time Kokubo didn't try the bunt and instead flew out right. Ishihara flew out and Amaya (replacment centre) struck out. Standridge had pitched seven very competent innings giving up only one run. For Tigers eighth the pitcher was Ueno who gave up a hit to Johjima. Nothing came of this and the innings was scoreless. Watanabe was chosen for Carp's eighth and was in nervous incapable mode. He started with a two base hit to Soyogi and then dead balled Kimura - runners on first and second. Iwamoto hit to right bringing home the runner 6-2 Carp, runners on first and third and no outs. If they both win all their games Tigers are assured of second place and home advantage in the first stage of the Climax series. The same applies if they win more than the Giants. Of course if the Giants win more than the Tigers then the Tigers travel to Tokyo Dome. One more hit for Murton to take the hits record - let's hope this happens at Jingu on Tuesday.
