Rose to Return as a Tiger?

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Rose to Return as a Tiger?
Today's Nikkan Sports (Oct 4) states that the Hanshin Tigers are inviting former Yokohama great Robert Rose to their fall camp with the prospect of a 5,000-man yen plus incentives contract. This is 1/10th what he was making his last year with Yokohama, but he's also been off the field for two years.

Nikkan Sports does report that Rose has been keeping up with his weight training at his Los Angeles home, and that even at the age of 35, his weight is at its best. (Wish I could say the same for me at the same age.)

For years people have been saying that they've wanted a clutch hitter like Rose. It looks like Hanshin has decided to go for the man himself. It should make for an interesting come back.

As a Rose fan, I would be happy to see him come back. Too bad it ain't the Baystars trying to get him back though. The Baystars could use him, as well as the Tigers. Anywhere but the Giants, please!

Regarding Rose (and also in relation to this thread, SanSpo today reports that "Robert" Rose is Hanshin's "insurance" in case they fail to get Petagine.

It mentions an 1-oku + incentives deal (double the above-mentioned 5000-man).
Lotte Makes Bid

Today's (Nov. 17) Nikkan Sports reports that the Chiba Lotte Marines are offering Rose 8,000-man yen for one year to the former BayStar.

The article says that Hanshin and Yokohama were both continuing to look into Rose, which suggests to me that they aren't any more. I could be mis-interpreting that. Can anyone confirm if the Lotte offer is a done deal or not?

It looks like a done deal. I read several different sports papers today and all of them reported that this deal is pretty much definite.

Bobby Rose is the consumate professional who has never slumped badly during all those years he played here. One thing about him makes me scratch my head though: he retired after the 2000 season to spend more time with his family and he turned down a boatload of money from Yomiuri back then, yet he's decided to come out of retirement for a paltry (for him, at least) $666,000 to play for Lotte of all teams. It just doesn't make sense to me....

It's somewhat similar I guess to Ryne Sandberg ending his one and a half year retirement to come back to play for the Cubs and similar to Michael Jordan ending his 3 year retirement to play for the Wizards, although those guys had a better reason to come back in my opinion.

The Daily Yomiuri of Sunday the 17th says that Lotte are "on the verge of" signing him. They don't mention Hanshin or Yokohama at all.

Hanshin seem - at this stage, anyway - to have the front running on Petagine, so maybe they felt that they didn't need to chase Rose so hard. I wonder...

Sorry - I take this back. SanSpo today reports that Yomiuri are now the favorites to acquire Petagine.

Peta is indeed a Giant, signing a two-year deal at six mil per. Nakamura is still being pursued by his current team, as well as the Tigers AND the Giants. Man, can you imagine the reaction if he were to sign with the Giants? TV ratings would sink even lower than they already have. Even as a Giant fan, I hope Nori joins another club or goes to the US...

Anyway, to stay on topic, I'm really excited that Bobby Rose is coming back. I've always enjoyed watching him play.
Rose Retires

I'm really disappointed in Bobby Rose and his half-hearted comeback. At least Orestes Destrade made it until the end of April or the beginning of May in 1995 when he tried to come back to NPB. As soon as I heard that Rose had come back to Tokyo because of stress (wink, wink), I knew that he was gone. Now this leaves Lotte in dire straits.

I was a huge Bobby Rose fan back when he played for the BayStars, but this turn of events has really disappointed me. I wish Rose wouldn't have not come back to Japan at all if he knew that his desire to play wasn't really there to begin with. I know that it's hard to know that until you actually get out there on the field and take some cuts, but the excuse about his family not being able to adjust to Japan irked me also. It seems to me like they did just fine for 8 years in Yokohama.
