Green Stadium Renamed
Today's (March 16) Nikkan Sports is reporting that Green Stadium Kobe, home of the Orix BlueWave, is being renamed to "Yahoo! BB Stadium." Softbank, the parent company of the broadband ADSL Internet service provider, purchased the naming rights for the stadium for two years at 2-oku (200,000,000) yen.

This follows the trend in Major League Baseball where stadiums carry company names. The only previous example in Japan is Tokyo Stadium, a stadium for J-League (soccer), which was renamed to Aji-no-Moto Stadium.

I'm not sure how well this name change will be recieved. I know I never called Candlestick Park whatever it was they renamed it to.

I still say Jack Murphy Stadium for Qualcom in San Diego; Anaheim Stadium for Edison International; and Oakland/Alameda for Network Associates whatever.

Most Baseball traditionalists resist using new corporate names of stadiums, and if Koshien ever became NTT Stadium, I'd probably light myself on fire. But for Green Stadium, this is probably a good thing for several reasons, the biggest of which is Orix could use the cash to keep/sign players.

Good point. Makes me wonder: Hanshin renaming the Koshien would be the most feeble idea since someone in the organisation said "Hey, this Greenwell guy looks like a good investment." But what about Orix? I don't mean to ruffle any feathers, but do they have enough die-hard fans (who would vigorously oppose the renaming, and encourage people to keep calling it Green Stadium) to make this an unwise decision?

Actually, I don't think Orix gets the money from Yahoo at all. The money goes to the Kobe city government actually (since Green Stadium is built by the city). It's just too bad that Orix don't get a lotta money out of it. Besides, I really like the name Green Stadium Kobe, because that's where I lived, and the name just souds good. Now it's called Yahoo BB Stadium... I don't really get what is there to Yahoo about.

Well, this is part of the plan to make Orix into an Americanized team. Almost everything they do now is copying the MLB. It's new, but I am not sure how well Japanese take this situation.

According to Yahoo Sports, the general admission (jiyuseki) for the game on the 31st will be free (unless I read the Japanese wrong) since the BlueWave have always had an attendance problem being the 3rd team in Kansai, no Ichiro, and a place hard to get to (you have to take the subway line near the end in the northern mountain area of Kobe).

I'm not a die-hard BlueWave fan, but I support the team, mainly because Green Stadium is my favourite stadium in Japan. It is hard to get to, but it's in a nice, secluded area. I always thought "Green Stadium" was a charming name, and I'm sorry to see it go. Still, the stadium itself is the same, and if Orix can pick up a few players, it'll be worth it, I guess.
