Tani to the Giants for Two Prospects

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Tani to the Giants for Two Prospects
The 33 year old former all star outfielder for the Orix Buffaloes, Yoshitomo Tani, has been traded to the Yomiuri Giants for infielder Masahiro Nagata and pitcher Takashi Kamoshida. My question is this, are the Giants on crack? These guys need to get young and they trade for a former all star who's hit just below .260 with 12 homers in over 900 at bats.

The way I look at this, they just wasted perfectly good at bats for young outfielders like Kamei and Yano. Not only that, but they traded away two of their second basemen, since Nishi was dealt to Yokohama. Part of me thinks the only reason they even went after Tani was to get more star power on the team to help ratings and media hype.

It's still early in the off-season and the Giants have already given Lee a ridiculous contract, possibly lost Kokubo, signed 37 year old Noriyoshi Ohmichi, dumped two prospects, gave away Hiroshi Satoh to Rakuten, and traded away an all star second baseman. Yikes. This isn't even counting the huge blunders during the season like signing George Arias, trading 27 year old Shinsuke Yamada for 34 year old Takuya Kimura, and the whole Kuwata debacle. This team really needs some front office changes.

Tani was overrated. In ten years with Orix he only had 3 good years. Now he is over the hill. Good trade for Orix. They got younger with two good prospects.

One of the papers (Hochi?) was saying that his wife, Ryoko Tamura (the Olympic judoist), really wanted to see him go to Tokyo.

As a fan of all the Kansai teams, I can only say that anything that helps the Giants get worse is good news!

I agree that Tani does not add anything to Yomiuri. He's over the hill and his star power is nothing like Shinjo's. Ogasawara would/will be a better pick-up.

But bats are not what Kyojin needs now. They need pitching. I don't think Hara-kantoku is a dumb fella. Let's wait and see if he can make some moves, and if the Watanabe suits pulling the strings will agree to terms. The Giants will rise again or NPB is in for some dire straits.

Good for the Giants. They added another overrated, overpaid player. I'm very happy being a Orix fan now that we have eliminated a huge hole in left and in the middle of the lineup. Now Orix needs to go and sign a quality foreign bat with power to play left.
