Swallows Sign Pitcher Mickey Callaway

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Swallows Sign Pitcher Mickey Callaway
With the impending loss of Rick Guttormson the Yakult Swallows have signed 31 year old right handed pitcher Mickey Callaway. Last season with the Hyundai Unicorns of the Korea Baseball Organization Callaway was 14-7 with a 2.87 ERA in 27 games. In his first year with the team Callaway was 16-9 with a 3.97 ERA in 32 games.

Joining Callaway in the rotation will be returnee Dickey Gonzalez. Adam Riggs and Alex Ramirez will be the two foreign hitters.

This comes as a shock, Yakult doesn't want to keep Guttormson but signs Callaway? I sometimes fail to understand some moves made by NPB teams.

Money was a factor in the decision. The Swallows chose Riggs over Guttormson. NPB teams aren't willing to spend money on foreign players anymore, thus they sign players from Taiwan and Korea in the $400,000 range.

It sounded like Guttormson had asked for a two-year, 700-million (7-oku) yen contract, and the Swallows basically replied, "Wait, why would we give you a raise? Have you forgotten that we demoted you to the farm team the day after you pitched a no-hitter? Sorry, dude."

But I agree, it sounds pretty dumb. Something tells me the Swallows aren't going to be very good next year.

Guttormson was asking for top pitcher money after just one year (though it's understandable because imports get cut as soon as they're not performing) and the Swallows aren't swimming in cash.

The yoyo-ing with the ni-gun team (with Gonzalez) was due to the lack of available import spots on the top team.

Smart move though, signing top foreigners from Korea and Taiwan. Low risk, possible high return.
