Yoshii (OBs) - (CLM) Hirashita Trade

Yoshii (OBs) - (CLM) Hirashita Trade
The Orix Buffaloes and Chiba Lotte Marines have made a trade as the trading deadline approaches at the end of June. Veteran right handed pitcher Masato Yoshii has been traded from Orix to the Marines for part time outfielder Koji Hirashita.

In 23 seasons, Yoshii has traveled from Kintetsu to Yakult, then the Majors (where he pitched for Bobby's Mets among other teams), returning to play for Orix. He's started 10 games so far this season, with 1 win, 6 losses, and a 5.75 ERA over 40 2/3rd innings.

Hirashita has only played in 5 games this season for Lotte, mainly as a defensive replacement. He's 0 for 2 at bats this season.

In the linked Sanspo article, Valentine-kantoku says that Yoshii is there to fill a hole in the Marines' pitching rotation should one open up.

I like this move. Hirashita was pretty much put on the back burner when Hayakawa was acquired. I really wonder what Orix is doing, though. They gave up Nakamura, Hayakawa, Tani, and two solid relievers. They're trading too much away.
