Pacific League 2004 Final Standings
With the conclusion of the 2004 Pacific League season, and looking forward to the playoffs starting October 1, here is how the PL concluded:

The top three teams will be competing to decide the Pacific League champion starting Friday with Seibu hosting the Nippon Ham Fighters. Game times have been announced: 6:00pm on Friday (10/1), 1:30pm on Saturday, and 1:00pm on Sunday (if necessary).

After that, the playoffs move to Fukuoka Dome where Daiei will host the winner. All five games (if it goes that long) will start at 6:00pm with the games running from Wednesday, October 6 to October 11 (excluding the 8th). If Nippon Ham wins the First Stage, Daiei will get an automatic win to start the series.

That's always confused me. Why do they get an automatic win?

Think of it as a penalty for finishing the season more than 5 games out for Fighters. The Lions, who finished 4.5 games out, won't have such a penalty against them.

The reason for the penalty (or credit to Daiei) is to give a greater advantage to finishing higher in the standings.

Well, it would be better to favor the underdogs? Cause they didn't stave off a literal last chance.
