Kroon smashes old speed record

Kroon smashes old speed record
Kroon pitched a 161 km/h fireball to Norihiro Akahoshi in the 12th inning of last night's game at Koshien. He was recorded at hitting 159 km/h numerous times and got 160 km/h later on.

Before Kroon came into the league, the previous record was 158 km/h. Irabu(Chiba Lotte) hit it in 1993, Yamaguchi(Orix) reached it in 2002, and Igarashi Ryota(Yakult) got it in 2004.

Impressive. Kroon has become the first pitcher in NPB history to top the 100 mph mark, if you convert from the metric system.

Kroon is truly impressive, he tied it at 158, broke it at 159, tied it twice with 159, then broke it with 161.

He has truly been impressive replacing Sasaki, he's 2-0 with 15SV's and a 1.89ERA this year.

Well he's fast but still needs more control. Last night Hanshin's Lin watched all his fastballs go by and took the the walk and only good fielding prevented a Fujimoto hit. The 142 kph pitch that struck out Akahoshi was far more impressive than his fastballs (which tended to be balls and easily ignored) - something different that had Akahoshi completely fooled and out watching. To be honest Kubota's 12th innings was far superior to Kroon's in every respect except speed.

Today Kroon dropped his speed and was extremely impressive. His fastballs (non of which topped 160) were strikes and he varied his pitches very nicely. He is a far better pitcher when he doesn't try to break speed records.

How fast is that in miles per hour?

Google has a really neat feature for converting to/from the metric system. Just type "161 kph in mph" into Google's search box (without the quotes) and you'll have your answer: 100.040762 mph.
