Taguchi was picked in the first round of Pacific League draft in 1991. He was picked up by the Cardinals as a free agent in 2002 and signed a 3 year contract with the organization. He holds the Japanese collegiate record for most hits in a season, and was captain for all his teams from junior high through his last year at Orix. 5 Gold Gloves in Japan.

After he signed with the Cardnials, he went straight to the minors and was publicly considered a failure after the success of Ichiro. Only this year has he gotten any credit due to an injury ridden Cardinal bench. He has stepped up and has recently broken the .300 batting average mark. His recently coined nickname in St. Louis is "Gooch." Would you like fish flakes with that?
