The Wrong Uniform

Discussion in the Open Talk forum
The Wrong Uniform
In tonight's (June 9) game between Hanshin and Seibu, Lion's Shogo Akada stepped up to the plate wearing Defence & Base-running Coach Hiroaki Ueda's jersey (#85). Apparently it was Akada's first appearance in a while and his uniform hadn't arrived in time*.

I've never heard of this happening before. Can anyone remember other cases in which players appeared in the "wrong" uniform? (Shinjo's appearance in a Hanshin uniform doesn't count!)

*Sorry, I haven't verified this info; I'm just trusting the TV commentators that Akada hasn't made the Lion's top team in a while.

I watched the game and thought it was absolutely hilarious to see Akada go up there with #85 and "Ueda" on his back.

How about Matsuzaka's performance? He gets a complete game, gives up a single run, reaches double digits in Ks again, and hits a monster homer. He's like a manga character.

Matsuzaka's almost like the real-life person of Kunimi Hiro from Adachi Mitsuru's manga "H2."

Funny thing however, is that Kunimi came before Matsuzaka. H2 started at 1992 and ended by 1999. Kunimi reaches 152~156ish km/h, has that high speed slider, a changeup/splitter and a curveball - something close to the arsenal Matsuzaka possessed. Kunimi also won back to back Koshien (Spring then Summer) tournaments.

There's just soooo much similarity between the two, it's pretty amazing IMO.

They did a dorama adaptation of "H2" last year which was actually really, really good. Yamada Takayuki (probably best known from "Water Boys" and "Sekai no Chuushin" and such) played Kunimi, and the rest of the cast was great as well. I've never read the manga, but I completely fell in love with the story when I saw the TV show.

I guess it's appropriate that "H2" ends with Kunimi going to America.

Oh, and to reply to the original post: Gary Garland said that "Akada left his uniform back at the hotel, so he had to wear the uni of one of the Lions' coaches. He's never going to hear the end of that." [Link - japanbaseballdaily.com]

After forgetting his uniform at home, Lou Whitaker had to buy a souvenir Detroit Tigers jersey with his number 1 drawn on the back with a marker in the 1985 All Star Game.

Apparently it does happen! As this article in the Daily Yomiuri reports and the photo in this article in SanSpo illustrates, Yu Darvish forgot to pack his jersey for a road game.
