ESPN Softball Blunders

ESPN Softball Blunders
I'm checking out ESPN's Softball World Cup between Japan and the U.S. and check out some of the "Japanese" terms they put on national TV to "educate" the Americans:
  • 1st Base - Hitotsu - should be "Ichirui" - hitotsu is the cardinal 1
  • Strikeout - Sanshin -correct
  • Base Hit - Ipon - should be "Anda" - Ipon is probably "ippon" which is the cardinal 1 for one hit, one home run, etc.
  • To Throw - nagemasu - correct
  • Drop - Drop-u - correct, though technically it should be "doroppu"
  • Walk-off Hit - Sayanara - correct-ish - it's "sayonara"
You'd think the "Worldwide Leader in Sports" would be more correct.

Saying hitotsu for first base isn't completely wrong - I often hear people yell "hitotsu", "futatsu", and "mittsu" for the three bases when they want the player with the ball to throw it to one of the bases. Being a first baseman in my amateur league, my ears are always perked for this word.

(They also say these when the batter gets a hit and they think he can get extra bases - "Mittsu!" means "Get to third!")

Probably they just listened to what the players were yelling on the field and then translated those into English, rather than looking for the ideal Japanese words.
