Jim Allen's CL MVP

Jim Allen's CL MVP
I always thought that Jim Allen did not know what he was talking about. But after reading how many instances he had to repeatedly bring up (and confusingly use obscure, stupid stats that no one ever uses) how Fukudome deserved the MVP award over Woods, well, let's just say it's official. I totally see why he reports in the NPB and no where else.

Who would you rather pitch to? Fukudome slapping fastballs under the protection of Woods; or Woods, who can drive a pitcher out 500 feet? Heck, Woods' back has to be hurting after carrying Chunichi for 2 years.

Get real Allen, this biased "I love the Japanese players because they are so great" is old. Turn the page. You look like an idiot.

I wouldn't be so extreme in my condemnation of Jim Allen's articles. Some of them are well argued and very astute. All are interesting. If I have any differences with his comments in this one it is that he's confusing means with ends. On base percentage is just a part of the process not the goal. Like stolen bases and hits, it looks good, but is not in itself vitally important. The ability to score runs and to bat runs in are far more important, and these are the statistics that should determine a player's worth. Everything else is useful only if it helps achieve these aims. Otherwise they are just statistics.

I think Woods is very deserving, but Fukudome's defense and plate discipline makes it a very tough decision. I also think NPB is still weary about giving a big strong foreigner the MVP after the Bonds-like years from Cabrera and Rhodes a few years back.

Sure am glad BigManZam wasted no time in pulling out the gaijin card on that one. I think the point has been proven.

Plate discipline? Is that a stat? Are we talking about the NPB or a college kid trying to get drafted out of a JUCO?

Look, Fukudome is a great player and worth his millions in Japan only (AAA .275 player in the States), but to read the article and it's obvious it wasn't written for Fukudome but against Woods. Take Woods out of the lineup and Fukudome is the man to be afraid of? Fukudome just doesn't strike fear in anyone.

Nice to see another scout roaming the boards. Until Fukudome plays in the majors, how do we know what he will bat? Are we some kind of psychic?

Lets look at Fukudome's stats before Woods was even playing for Chunichi. They were more than above average. No, Fukudome doesn't strike fear in pitchers. Also, Fukudome is more of a complete player, able to do everything: hit, run, hit for power, hit for average, shows great plate discipline, plays excellent defense, etc., while Woods doesn't.

Finally, without Fukudome, Woods wouldn't have half the HR and RBI opportunities without Fukudome batting in front of him.

When did Fukudome play in the States? Lefty In Morioka, could you post Fukudome's entire stats? That would be really great. Thanks man. Also, what team did Fukudome play for when he was in the States?

Yeah when has the amount of feet a hitter hit a ball been a real stat? Less so than your criticism of plate discipline. How far a hitter hits a ball not relevant. A home run is a home run. This is not the long-ball derby game you enjoy watching.

Well, I won't debate this, but it does give me the excuse to congratulate the winners, two of my very favorite players, and perhaps the two best in Japan today, while noting Wood's and Saitoh's extraordinary seasons as well.

Jim, I think you are just great, and my call was exactly the same as yours, for the same reasons, before I'd read your column (of course, we stand on the shoulders of the same giants).

Fukudome is the best, by far my favorite Japanese player.
