Atsushi Nohmi - Hanshin?
Does anyone know if Nohmi is expected to be in the starting rotation this year? Thanks.

Yes - Nohmi is slated to be part of the starting rotation. He pitched as starter against the Giants today and did quite well - six hits and only one run.

He's definitely a candidate. Okada-kantoku has given him several starts this spring. Actually saw him pitch on TV today against the Giants, had a pretty good strike to ball ratio over 5 innings. Maybe whiffed 3 or 4 and gave up one home run on which was a pretty good forkball but Tani dug it out and went yard.

Nohmi, in previous years, has had good starts to the season and faded quickly. Today was slightly encouraging, but it would be way too early to say he was consistent.

I wonder if his stint in the Hawaii Winter League helped.

Thanks for the responses.

I saw him pitch several times in Hawaii. It was great watching the games there. I plan on going back in the fall. The only problem is the games will be played on some of the other islands this year as well which will likely decrease the number of games I will get to see while I am there.

I was lucky enough to see Bobby Valentine in Connecticut this winter and he spoke highly of Nohmi. I may ask you folks from time to time about some other players I saw in Hawaii, so thanks in advance. I will also report back on any Japanese players I see in the Eastern League (AA minors).

Play ball!

Quite possibly. He will be included in Hanshin's initial starting lineup and will start against Hiroshima on 1st April. As Cheese mentioned, he has started well in the past but tended to fade. So he could end up being replaced by either Andoh or Fukuhara when they are ready.
