Who's More Popular?

Discussion in the Open Talk forum
Who's More Popular?
Ok, here is the deal. I'm a huge Ichiro fan and think he made a bigger impact in Japan and the U.S. compared to other Japanese baseball players. However, a friend of mine, who has absolutely no idea about anything related to Japanese baseball "claims" that Hideki Matsui is more popular in Japan (which I assume is just because he's a Skankee fan).

So, in your honest opinion, who's more popular in the land of rising sun? Ichiro or Matsui? Nomo, Oh, and other Japanese would count, too. I don't live in Japan, but I would like to know which player is the most popular there.

It didn't really expalin anything besides a bunch of people arguing back and forth on a little topic.

Any website ever done a poll to the entire Japanese population in the past about it? I'm interested to know.

Who was more popular in 1998: McGwire or Sosa? It depends on where you're from.

Similarly, it depends entirely upon where you're from. Matsui had the bigger market, Tokyo, but Ichiro was the face of Kansai.

Suraj is right. Another point is that now that they're both in the majors, Matsui is much more accomodating to the media, which garners him more coverage. Ichiro goes through periods where he ignores the media.

Anyway, the Tigers' exciting season was the real story in Japanese baseball, at least in Kansai. Hanshin coverage and interest dwarfed any Major League news.

Frank: Concerning Japanese polls, I posted on March 29, 2003 in the above referenced Nichi-Bei Forum the following:
The March 29, 2003 Japan Today [link no longer available] reports on the results of a Japanese survey conducted by Dentsu Research Inc.

Only 30% of those polled expect Matsui to become American League Rookie of the Year.

76.4% of responadants expected Ichiro to be Rookie of the Year in a similar poll prior to the 2001 season.
