Dame Gaijin

Dame Gaijin
Since another current post is asking about most beloved foreign players, I was just thinking of the opposite. Who are some players who were complete busts here and should probably never step foot in Japan again? Obvious names that come to mind are Kevin Mitchell and Dan Miceli. Any other candidates for the "Hall of Shame"?

For sure, Gabe Kapler after seeing what he has done since returning to the U.S. It just goes to show that not everybody can make the adjustment.

How about Freddy Garcia for the Kintetsu Buffaloes in 2001?

Kapler later admitted that he came to Japan for the money and it was the last time he would ever do such a thing. At least it was the Giants that he burned! They have a history of overpaying foreign players and getting little in return. Can't complain about that!

Speaking of Kapler, it's ironic to see Japan embracing Red Sox Nation now that Matsuzaka has joined them. Former Red Sox players have been very bad to NPB. Just before the Kapler debacle, Kevin Millar spurned the Dragons to join the Red Sox. And I'm sure no one in Kansai has forgoten about Mike Greenwell, who signed a huge contract with the Tigers only to hurt his back, play in a handful of games, find God, and escape back to the US to race trucks.

Mike Greenwell broke his foot - it wasn't his back.

Right, it was a broken foot that ended his season, but he also "supposedly" hurt his back in spring training. In either case, he took the money and ran.

Sure, but it was the foot that was the message from God, not the back.

Also, it should be noted that the Tigers negotiated a lower figure with Greenwell than the full $3 million salary that's often quoted. So while he took some money and ran, the deal wasn't as lucrative for him as has been suggested. But I wouldn't disagree with you that he was indeed a dame gaijin.
