Batters Hitting Over .370 in a Season
Uchikawa for Yokohama is about to end a phenomenal season with a batting average above .370. Maybe above .380. Uchikawa is currently hitting .375 which makes it the 9th best in NPB history.

There have not been many players who has achieved this. The season record is held by Randy Bass who hit .389 in 1986 together with 47 home runs!

Here is the list from NPB BIS.
  1. Bass .389 (1986)
  2. Ichiro .387 (2000)
  3. Ichiro .385 (1994)
  4. Harimoto .3834
  5. Ohshita .3831 (1951)
  6. Cromartie .378 (1989)
  7. Kawakami .377 (1951)
  8. Nakane .376 (1936/Autumn)
  9. Bloomfield .374 (1962)

Those are some pretty big names on that list right there. Keep it up Uchi, I'm pulling for you and hopefully next year, the BayStars Shop shows you a little more love and makes more goods with your name on it.

I have not seen much of him play so I am not sure what kind of batter he is. Is he fast? Does he get lots of infield hits like Ichiro? Is he like Ochiai who hit a lot to the opposite field? His stats say that he must be one very good hitter.

I always thought of Uchikawa as a potential "5 tool player" so to speak. In my opinion, he's a solid contact hitter who can hit for power at times and also steal a base. Defense wise, I think he needs just a little more work at first, but is very dependable nonetheless. I think that he could become a so called "5 tool player" if he would hit for more power.

124GP, 499PA, 377/414/529, color me very impressed!

He's got 47 extra-base hits (35 doubles) so far, so he is showing gap power, and he should continue to gain power like Aoki has because he's still only 26 and is about to hit his peak.

Then again, his last three seasons were
274/332/385
286/329/363
279/337/457

He's certainly developed his power game over the past two seasons. And whatever really clicked for him this season, let's hope it continues!
