Katsuya Nomura
I recently read that manager Katsuya Nomura resigned his post due to the legal troubles of his wife? Have many baseball men resigned under shame or to atone for on-the-field failure or off-the-field difficulties?

Hmmmm... I sense cultural misconceptions here.
Nomura did not resign his post "under shame" or for "atonement". In the years that he guided the Tigers, they never finished out of last place. Rumors of his possible firing were frequent the whole year preceeding his wife's scandal. When the scandal broke, it was basically the last straw. Now, not only was Nomura not winning, but now he (or rather, his wife) was embarrassing the organization. (Let's not use needlessly archaic phrases like "disgracing the team name" or "bringing shame to the Tigers".) It is highly questionable whether Nomura would have been fired (his resignation being mere semantics) if his team had finished first the last three years.
Japanese baseball managers don't resign to atone for on-field failure or off-field difficulties, any more than American baseball managers do. Many "resignations" are de facto firings, except that "resignations" make everyone look good.
Japanese teams will discipline managers and players for breaking the law much harsher than an American team would, but this represents a) a weaker union, and b) a society where the seperation between work and private life is nearly non-existent. But real-life Japan is not like Karate Kid Part II...
