Baseball Popularity
Hello.

Could you give me an estimate of the numbers of people in Japan (and Korea if possible) who play baseball? An estimate will be enough. Thank you for your courtesy.

Well, professionally there are 12 teams in Japan, each with as many as 70 players (including the farm teams). That makes about 840 players.

If you're talking at all levels, divide the population by something between 20 (percentage of people in the company I work for who play) and 5000 (taking into account companies that don't have a team, children under the age of 6 - although my son's been playing catch and swinging a bat since he was 3, and a wide range of socio-economic factors that might come into play. Is that rough enough?
About

This is a site about Pro Yakyu (Japanese Baseball), not about who the next player to go over to MLB is. It's a community of Pro Yakyu fans who have come together to share their knowledge and opinions with the world. It's a place to follow teams and individuals playing baseball in Japan (and Asia), and to learn about Japanese (and Asian) culture through baseball.

It is my sincere hope that once you learn a bit about what we're about here that you will join the community of contributors.
