横浜村田が本塁打王争いのトップに並んだ。９回、ヤクルト高津から左越え３５号ソロ。連夜の１発で、中日ウッズ、巨人高橋由に並び、目標の１００打点も達成。３打席凡退で迎えた最終打席だった。「タイトルは欲しいですが、本塁打を狙うことはしません」。スタイルを貫いた結果だ。８回には男・村田らしいプレーも見せた。引退試合の鈴木健の三邪飛を捕球しなかった。「あの雰囲気で捕ったらまずいと思って」。ファンから大きな拍手を受けた。敗戦で５割復帰は逃したが、残り５試合。本塁打王の栄冠とチームの５割に挑む。
