Next Start for Kei Igawa

Next Start for Kei Igawa
New York media is reporting this morning that Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens has a mild groin injury and will be unable to start vs. the White Sox on Monday, June 4. The leading candidate to replace him would seem to be Kei Igawa, now in the minors at AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Apparently he has already been scratched from a scheduled start there.

"Well, we are going to need a starter for Monday," remarked Joe Torre-kantoku. But he also cautioned that it doesn't automatically mean Igawa will get the call.

Igawa's first Triple-A start was on Tuesday, May 29, when he allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings against the Toledo Mud Hens.

Igawa would've been the choice if he pitched a gem in Scranton, but Matt DeSalvo is going to get the start instead.

And tonight it looks like that first report was indeed premature. ESPN has just announced that Matt DeSalvo will start for the Yankees tomorrow evening against the White Sox, not Igawa.

Nice story in today's (June 17) NY Post about Igawa's progress in the minors, entitled "Minor Miracle: Sharp Igawa back in Yanks' plans" (by Pat Reichart). In his last three starts with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, Kei-san has allowed four earned runs, striking out 21 batters in 20 innings. Yankee GM Brian Cashman is quoted in the article: "Based on what we heard from [Scranton pitching coach] Dave Eiland, he's come a long way. He focused on his change-up [Thursday night] and, based on what we've heard, it's there... All I care about is him being an effective major-league pitcher. We've been encouraged and impressed with his work at Scranton."

So let's hope we see Kei-san back in the Bronx soon!

Yes, it looks good for Igawa. He looks poised to replace Tyler Clippard's spot in the rotation on Friday against the Giants according to this article from today's New York Post. It also says that he could rejoin the team sometime in Denver to throw a bullpen session in front of pitching coach Ron Guidry.

Indeed, the New York Yankees' website now lists Kei Igawa as the starter for Friday night, June 22, against Matt Cain and the San Francisco Giants, in San Francisco. The game starts at 7:15 p.m. PDT (10:15 p.m. on the North American east coast).
