Is Cabrera Interested in the Majors?
I'm wondering what Alex Cabrera's contract situation is, and whether he has any interest in moving to the majors. It seems he has the talent, but I haven't heard any talk about it.

I don't think it would be worth his while. He has already had a crack at the majors, spending about 8-9 years trying to hit the big time after getting signed by the Cubs. He didn't have much luck when he did break into the Diamonbacks in 2000.
He gets paid great in Japan and has had great success. He's almost 33 and, with injuries, I seriously doubt he could build a respectable career in North America.

I see. But I think he compares well with Hideki Matsui when they both played in Japan at the same time, so couldn't he put up Matsui-like numbers in the majors, too? And Matsui is an All-Star player.

Cabrera has stated a number of times in the past that he has no interest of trying to break into the Majors any more. He didn't like the way he was treated there and gave up on the system.
On the other hand, most foreigners in Japan eventually get frustrated with the system here (not just in baseball), so he may eventually have a change of heart. But then, I haven't gotten to that stage after almost 18 years here, so it may be a while.

Also, when guys like Cabrera get to Japan, they're at or passing their prime, so they've got a limited window of time to change their minds.

The knock on Cabrera in the U.S. was that he couldn't hit the curveball. He says that's nonsense and says he would like to return to the majors to prove his hitting isn't restricted to one side of the international dateline.
"If someone gives me a chance in the majors, I'll hit more than 40 jacks," Cabrera said. "If I have a chance to go back to America, I will. If someone calls me, I go."
Someone call him - please! He can play first base, outfield, and DH. Why not give him a shot?
