Taguchi So's Career Stats
Since requests for information on Taguchi are already starting to come in from St. Louis, it's time to post some stats:

I've put up the stats in CSV (the standard format for spreadsheets and databases) format for others, but never heard if anyone found them useful. Would anyone like them for Taguchi?

I'd love to see his defensive record. I know range factor hasn't caught on in Japan but a break down of errors by position would help. I understand that he has played some catcher and second base. Could that account for 26 errors between '98 and '99? Just how good is he at the positions he has played? I'd like to believe that he won the Gold Glove legitimately, not because its a popularity contest.
Please fill me in on his strengths and weaknesses on offense. Can he hit to all fields? Will his speed translate to more SB in the majors? I noticed some whopping sacrifice totals. How much will a change in managerial style change his productivity?
Thanks for a tremendous baseball resource,
Oliver

When the American and Japanese all-star teams faced off in 2000, Taguchi handled Randy Johnson with a single and a double in four at-bats. I've compiled his game log with notes on the pitchers against whom he reached base, as well as his series totals and a few leader boards. I've also added a couple extraneous details at the bottom of the post. Enjoy!

             AB R H BI Notes
Game 1 0 0 0 1 SF off Danny Graves
Game 2 5 0 2 2 double off Randy Johnson, single off Javier Vasquez, 2 SO
Game 3 4 0 1 0 walk off Livan Hernandez, single off Mike Sirotka, SO,
advanced lead runner with fielder's choice
Game 4 4 1 1 0 double off Keith Foulke, reached second on Jeff Kent's error
Game 5 2 0 2 0 walk, single and SB off Ryan Dempster; walk and SB off Eric
Milton, single off Mike Myers, thrown out at home by Bonds
Game 6 4 0 1 0 single off Randy Johnson, 2 SO
Game 7 3 0 0 0
Game 8 4 1 1 0 single off Mike Myers, GIDP

Over the course of 8 games, Taguchi had the third best OBP overall yet had only 4 opportunities to steal from first base with nobody in front of him. They all came in game 5 and he successfully swiped a pair (in two attempts). His only other opportunities to steal second were a trio of first and third situations in game 3, but two came in the middle of big innings and Japan had a big lead early on (final score 14-5)
It appears nobody tested his arm as nobody advanced on a fly to him.

These statistics are unbelievable... I am wondering if you have the complete view of the 2000 series between MLB players and Japan Stars... I am really interested because I had the opportunity to see some of these games. Thanx if you can help!

Here's the URL. I'd love to hear your impression of Taguchi. I won't get to watch him for a couple months at least.
