Coming to Japan in 2003?

Discussion in the Rumor Mill forum
Coming to Japan in 2003?
Ivan Rodriguez of Puerto Rico may soon be playing in Japan. Rodriguez, 31, has been, arguably, the best catcher in the Major Leagues in the past ten years. He is a free agent this year, and there are only two teams seriously interested in the Major Leagues, the Chicago Cubs and Baltimore Orioles. Neither team has offered "Pudge" a contract that he likes. According to the Chicago Tribune, Rodriguez and his agent have been talking seriously with an unnamed Japanese team. That team has, according to Rodriguez's agent, offered the best contract so far.

Personally, I think that this is just a bargaining tool and that Rodriguez will never leave the Majors. If you remember, Sandy Koufax and, I think, Don Drysdale once threatened to go to Japan if they did not get a new contract. So it could be something like that. But who knows? This would be the biggest Major League name to ever sign a contract with a Japanese team.

This is a site about Pro Yakyu (Japanese Baseball), not about who the next player to go over to MLB is. It's a community of Pro Yakyu fans who have come together to share their knowledge and opinions with the world. It's a place to follow teams and individuals playing baseball in Japan (and Asia), and to learn about Japanese (and Asian) culture through baseball.

It is my sincere hope that once you learn a bit about what we're about here that you will join the community of contributors.
