Orix - Yokohama Old Timers HR Contest
Before the June 11th game between the Orix Buffaloes and Yokohama BayStars at Yokohama Stadium, there will be a home run competition between former sluggers from each team. Current Orix hitting coach Ralph Bryant will represent the Buffaloes, and current Yokohama hitting coach Tomio Tashiro will represent the BayStars. Ralph Bryant hit 49 home runs and won the MVP award during Kintetsu's Pacific League pennant year in 1989, while Tomio Tashiro is currently 2nd on Yokohama's all time home run list with 278. "I'm really looking forward to this. I've got to pick out my bat and start practicing more," added Bryant. It should also be noted that Tashiro holds Yokohama's strike out record wth 1,081, and Bryant holds the PL's highest season total in with 204 whiffs in 1993.

Westbaystars-san, is there any way you could let us know the results since you're one of the Yokohama fans here with a satellite dish? I doubt the TV sports highlights will cover it, and there might be something on the sports papers websites, but you never know for sure.

I'll do my best to cover it. I just can't guarantee that it'll be televised.

I couldn't find anything on any of the sports newspapers websites, so I dug through the Yokohama BayStars official website and found this page with a pre-game note describing the home run contest.

Ralph Bryant 3 - 0 Tamio Tashiro.
Bryant-Coach - Ready to be Activated Hitting 3 in a Row

Nikkan Sports' paper edition had a box with photo of Bryant and Tashiro shaking hands along with a good sized paragraph about the contest. I'm afraid that I was out most of Saturday, so I missed it. Sorry.

Nonetheless, this is my rather poor translation of the Nikkan article:
Bryant, ready to be activated!?

Before the Yokohama vs. Orix game (at Yokohama), Orix' Bryant-batting coach (44) and Yokohama's Tashiro-batting coach (50) had a home run hitting contest. Tashiro-coach finished his five swings without an arch [home run], while Bryant-coach's power, even at 44 years of age, is alive and kicking. From the third swing, Bryant placed balls into the upper right field stands, just right of the back screen [straight away center], and again to the upper right field stands for three blasts in a row and an easy victory. This "itemae batting order" slugger of the past said, "I'm very greatful to have been given this opportunity. And I was moved by the cheers."
[Warning, that was a translation of a translation at the end. Bryant's actual words may have been different.]
