Lotte Clinches
The Chiba Lotte Marines, with their defeat of the Yakult Swallows at Jingu Tuesday night (June 14) have clinched a tie for the top team in inter-league play. The team with the best record winning percentage takes home 5,000-man yen. They're guaranteed half that, looking for one more win in the next two games for the other half. Softbank needs to win their remaining two games with Lotte dropping the last two to Yakult to tie.

Lotte is currently 23 and 10 in inter-league play, of which they're 13 and 2 (1 tie) on Central League soil. Overall against the Central League, the Marines are:

5 - 1 vs. Chunichi
1 - 3 vs. Yakult (2 games to go)
5 - 1 vs. Giants
3(1)2 vs. Hanshin
5 - 1 vs. Hiroshima
4 - 2 vs. Yokohama

Yakult has been their biggest problem, dropping three in a row between May 13-15, losing 0-1, 3-11, and 0-1 respectively. The two shutouts were two of only three shutouts Lotte has suffered in inter-league play.

Lotte is currently leading the Pacific League with a 47 and 18 (1 tie) record, 4.5 games in front of the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks.

Softbank won two in a row to keep in the race. Lotte lost one and was rained out on Thursday, postponing the deciding match by a day.

Well, it's all over now. Lotte just defeated the Yakult Swallows at Jingu Kyujyo minutes ago 5-1 to take all the marbles in 2005 inter-league play.

Congratulations Valentine-kantoku, the Chiba Lotte Marines, and Player Number 26 (the oendan).

The MVP for Japan's very first inter-league games is pitcher Hiroyuki Kobayashi. Kobayashi started in 6 games, and had a record of 5 and 0 with a 2.74 ERA. He also batted .300 with 3 RBI in the times he stepped up to the plate in the Central League parks. He'll recieve 2 million yen for the award. "I'm happy that the fans all over Japan have gotten to know my name. I'll never be able to forget this for my entire life. I'll use the money for my kid." Kobayashi added.
