Matsuzaka's elbow

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Matsuzaka's elbow
According to the Daily Yomiuri On-Line, the Lions have taken Matsuzaka off their 28-man active roster. The paper doesn't provide much else in terms of details, just that Daisuke will undergo another medical examination and join the club's farm team until he fully recovers. Sounds like a potential Tommy John injury to me. Does anyone have more information? Even if it's not a ligament tear, all those innings pitched have obviously taken their toll on the Lion's ace. I hope the Hawks

Today's Nikkan Sports was equally evasive as to the problem. They only said that he's been ordered not to pitch, not even for practice, for a while, but how long that while is wasn't mentioned. Each time Matsuzaka was asked for more specifics, his reply was "no comment."

Nikkan mentioned that the Lions were using the World Cup period to rest their ace since there are only 18 games in the month of June. But like you say, the information being given is still pretty vague.

I think that Matsuzaka has lasted a lot longer than most critics thought. I hope he can continue to defy the odds and stay healthy.

The Japan Times mentions that Matsuzaka was taken off the active roster Saturday (8/31/02) due to an injury to his right leg, but doesn't give any more details. Does Nikkan Sports or any other publications elaborate?

Nikkan Sports reported on the 31st that Matsuzaka pulled his right 内転筋 (nai-ten-kin? - "inner rolling string"? - I'm not good with medical terms) during practice on the 29th. This is the second time this month that Matsuzaka pulled it, so it's now unknown if he'll be ready in time for the Nihon Series.

Without Matsuzaka, though, the Lions were 21 and 5 for the month of August. It's a shame that the boy "monster" isn't around to enjoy it.

"Inner rolling string," eh? My guess would be a groin muscle, but don't quote me on that. Thanks for the info.

I believe the correct Translation for that is "hamstring."
