Cabrera Ties Record

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Cabrera Ties Record
The Seibu Lions' big slugger Alex Cabrera hit number 55 last night (Oct. 2) at Seibu Dome in the Lions' 135th game of the season. This is the same landmark point that Tuffy Rhodes reached a year ago. Sadaharu Oh reached 55 at the 140 game mark back in 1964.

So, as BrianH-san asks here, with 5 games left, "Yes or no: Will he do it?"

As a Venezuelan I hope he breaks that legendary record and hope he can make it once again to MLB. He's a great player and he deserves another shot with the D'backs.

Cabrera had stated last season that he had become disenchanted with the Majors and didn't want to go back. I don't know how serious he is about sticking to that conviction, though. Especially after not getting anything to hit yesterday afternoon (Oct. 5) against Daiei.

He got one pitch down the middle which he swung and missed at. Pretty much everything else was high and in, high and away, or down and away. He did rip a high fastball (a ball) up the middle for a base hit in the third. Otherwise, he walked twice, was hit by a pitch, and struck out swinging at a ball in frustration his last at bat.

Cabrera critisized the Hawks as being unprofessional, and the press was full of critism for the lack of challenge as well. Baseball fans throughout the country want to see the big guy do it.

The big question is, though, will this change his mind about returning to the MLB?

Hey if the remaining teams he faces throw him junk, you never know......

Maybe he'll soften up a little. You can't hold the whole league accountable, the Dbacks are only one team.

He is not going to break the record! He should save his effort and energy for the upcoming Japanese series against the Giants!

A foreign-born player will never break Oh's record. Just like with Cabrera this season and Rhodes last, if they get close, they won't get anything to hit. The pitcher who ever surrenders home run #56, will be out of a job before the ball clears the fence. What a shame. If Japenese baseball is so against a foreigner breaking Oh's home run record, then they shouldn't allow foreigners to play.

Let him break the record of home runs in Japan, because he has been the most powerful player and he has been in Japan for 4 years. I think it is very stupid not to let him break the record of home runs.

Please, don't even try to imply that Cabrera didn't break the home run record because teams wouldn't pitch to him. If Cabrera would have hit the home runs when he needed to, he would have broken the record.

No one prevented Cabrera from breaking Oh's record, the same with Tuffy Rhodes. Neither of them hit home runs when they needed to.

So what is he doing now? Is it true he is having problems? Does anyone want to sign him?

Cabrera wanted 10-oku yen (about $10 million) one year contract from Seibu, but settled for 2 year 14-oku contract that'll keep him on the team until 2007. None of the other teams wanted him at that cost.

So whatever happened to Cabrera's home run race? I get as far as "He has tied the record!" and, then, nothing else. No news. Is there a web site where you can track statistics in Japanese baseball or, at least, keep informed? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Hahaha, well said.

He was stranded on 55, meaning he only equalled the record. By all accounts and by his own admission, he started swinging at anything and everything.

Ironically, the minute the regular season (and his crack at the record) ended, he starts smacking 'em over the wall again.

Poor guy. I really hoped he'd do it.

Cabrera is a very outstanding player, until in the Carabbean Series at Saco del Parque, deserves to be in the great leagues like minimo, their numbers are not valued as they deserve, in Venezuela want it and respected much. Asi as I tie the single record with that demonstrates the good thing that it is in baseball every year gives the best thing of if. I hope to know more of his a travels of these pages. Good luck, Alex.

It is clear that it depends on if they want to throw to him or not like last year, because this is the condition for repeating such a good year.

Claro que si puede eso dependera de si le quieren lanzar o no como paso el a

With this home run record tied by Alex Cabrera, who is a Venezuelan baseball player who plays in Japan for the Seibu Lions, is there any chance for him to go to the baseball Hall of Fame in Japan? Did he make history with this tied record? What I really want to know about this issue is to see if Alex Cabrera is a baseball star in Japan.

In Venezuela they do not write much about Baseball in Japan. This is not good since we have two important Venezuelan players like Alex Cabrera and Petagine there who are outstanding.

en venezuela no escriben mucho del beisbol japones y no esta bien porque tenemos a jugadores venezolanos importantes como Alex Cabrera! y Petagine. Vaya que se han destacado
