Yakult to Add Tokyo to Name

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Yakult to Add Tokyo to Name
The Yakult Swallows will add "Tokyo" to their official team name, club president Yoshikazu Tagiku said. The new name is part of new player-manager Atsuya Furuta's effort to get the club to step up efforts to become more appealing to the local community.

The new change needs approval by 9 of the 12 NPB clubs at the NPB executive committee owners meeting.

Great move, especially now that the Giants are no longer Tokyo but just Yomiuri, right?

A great move indeed. Hopefully the first step of many in revamping the team's marketing/image.

Whew, I thought I'd missed something when I saw the TOKYO at the beginning of their team name today. It kind of reminds me of the LOS ANGELES ANGELS - only Yakult REALLY plays in Tokyo.

Adds a nice touch to the Tokyo Ondo that the oendan and the fans sing.

Will this name change kick in this year?

They already did. It's written as "Tokyo Yakult Swallows" in the official guide books coming out this year.

New uniforms will debut at the end of March as part of "Project F."

Wow. BIG news!

I am waiting with baited breath for these. This looks like it could be the start of the long overdue re-branding that the Swallows have needed for a number of years.

Will these just be a subtle change to incorporate the change in name or a total overhaul? Personally I hope that they keep the same basic designs (i.e. white home and blue road jerseys) but refine them a little to make them slicker. If they replace the "Yakult" on the road jersey with "Tokyo" then that would prove to me that they are serious about their re-branding.

Plus how will their name be abbreviated? Will it remain as ヤ or will it become 東?

Finally if they could replace that penguin and get themselves a decent logo then life would be perfect!

I guess all these things will come apparent in the coming weeks.

After thinking about this some more I've a feeling they're going to go for a total overhaul. The reason I think this is that this year's fan club members card is green, and the fanclub cap and shirt are also green (check the Swallows official site to see the pictures).

Not sure how I feel about green though, if that's what they choose. If they do, at least the jerseys will now match the green umbrellas carried by all Swallows fans.

What they should do is bring back those cool light blue uniforms that they use to wear. There was a really subtle shaded stripe pattern going on that you could only see if you looked closely. And with no team wearing pants other than gray and white, they'd look distinctive. Bring back the blue!

Maybe that's why the online Swallows store seems to be not restocking their replica unis. I wanted to get a Furuta road replica uni, those are sharp. Not sure about going green.

I wish every team would do this. The lack of marketing of regional identities is one of the things that has always baffled me about Japanese baseball.

Maybe because Japan is a smaller country geographically, home games also are very different. Instead of (almost) the entire stadium being occupied by the home fans (like in North American pro sports and European soccer), the visiting fans get to occupy the 3rd base side of the infield seats and the left field bleachers. Sometimes the visiting fans overwhelm the home team, like when the Tigers visit the Swallows in Jingu.
