Giants Unveil New Uniforms

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Giants Unveil New Uniforms
Just saw on the 6 pm NTV news the press conference where the Giants unveiled their new unis. The home ones really haven't changed all that much, execpt for an Adidas logo on the upper breast and some orange on the lining of the cap, and a little different letter style on the front.

However, the road unis are god-awful. They are going to wear black tops with white pants. They look like those black batting practice jerseys that they've been wearing the last few years. Man, what an eyesore. Those wouldn't even be fit for a slow-pitch softball league.

Nice unis for a last place team.

There not as bad as Rakuten's, but not all that creative either.

I'm in total agreement that these unis are ugly. The home ones are fine - those are the ones they left alone - but I don't like the black ones at all - and I don't like the white ones with the cursive Giants on them much either. I don't even like the added bit of orange on the caps.

I suppose the black jersey is kind of cool as a jersey to wear around. I don't like it for on the field, but it's not too bad otherwise. Why did they go with white numbers, though? Looks really odd when there's no other white on the jersey.

I know I was in the vast minority, but I actually really liked the grey YG away unis they wore last year. Glad I got one while they were making them. I also kind of tend to think they were the coolest Giants unis to wear states-side because they don't look like SF Giants unis at a glance, and that YG logo is a classic.

Oh well, I'm sure they'll be changing them again for '07.

And to top it off the black tops have names and numbers in silver on the back of the unis. Since when is silver a Giants color?

Not to pass judgement, but it looks like somebody is taking notes from the Marines and opening up to the fans in other ways than profit.

True, but I don't think they quite beat out the Hawks' unis as the ugliest!

Yep, no argument with that either. There are several uglier unis in NPB, no doubt, but the classic Giants unis definitely could be among the league's best if done right. In my opinion, these are not.

Yup, unless Softbank's going to do something about it soon, they're going to have the ugliest unis by a wide margin for a while.

The classic Giants uni is just a SF Giants copy though, sure they're nice, but they're not original, so I'm not willing to give them much credit for that. But then again, the Carp and Dragons moving away from the Reds and Dodgers look didn't work all that well either. Classic designs are strong.

If you mean the grey ones with the YG on the left breast, even those were copies of the 1986-1993 SF Giants away jerseys.

It's really quite fascinating that the Giants basically copy every uniform or stylistic change of their Stateside cousin. In the mid '70s the Giants even altered their lettering (taken from the 1930s NY Giants) to a front more in tune with what the SF Giants were wearing at the time. It takes a few years to come across the ocean, but it does eventually.

The batting practice getups? Basically copies of the SF Giants batting practice gear.

It's really is mindboggling. I know there's only so much you can do with orange and black, but I really think they have a mole inside the SF Giants marketing department.

Yes, I did mean those, but at least you can tell the difference between the SF and YG logos, even though they're similar. As for the classic home unis, I think it would have to be someone pretty well informed and looking pretty closely to even notice it wasn't an American jersey.

Hm, I don't like the Adidas logo on the upper left chest. It stands out too much. It should be on the sleeve.

Agreed that the black jersey is awful. Gray away was awesome.

Also, what's the point of the alternate jersey if it looks the same (white) but with a different font?

Yeah, it looks like the alternate has some more black in the underarm area, but other than that it is very similar to the home one. I don't like that font at all, for the record. Oh well.

If they play better I'll be perfectly happy watching the '06 Giants wearing my '05 grey away jersey.

Those silver numbers on the front look really out of place and bizarre.

I would have liked to see them go with what San Francisco had a few years ago: black letters with an orange outline, so that it looks like just an outline. SF had this scheme, with only number on the back, as a home alternate in 2001 and it sure looked spiffy. (Though to be fair, I think Orix pioneered the "outline only" look.)

Well, if the Giants' play is as ugly as their new look, it should be a pleasant season!

After having a chance to take a good look at the Giants' new road uniforms, I have to say that they are the 2nd worst uniforms in NPB after Yokohama's road duds. Black tops only work as an alternate jersey.

Although I despise the Giants, they are a team with a long history and tradition like the Yankees, and they shouldn't be tinkering with their uniforms every few years like they've been doing lately like they're some second-rate expansion team.

Some advice to the Giants: Look at the Yankees' uniforms and take notes. They don't go around changing their uniforms the way people change their underwear like you guys do. The Yankees never went to powder blue on the road in the '70s when every other team was doing it. You guys did have ugly powder blue uniforms for awhile but you guys corrected that mistake by going with classic grey. The look you guys had from '93 to about 2003 was classic-looking and awesome. Please do us a favor and go back to that look.
