Kazuhisa Ishii Returns to Swallows
Left hander Kazuhisa Ishii will return to Japan to pitch for the Yakult Swallows. Ishii had held talks with the Eagles and Fighters but decided to return to his old team.

Ishii is known for his power but also his wildness. In four Major League seasons, Ishii walked around 100 batters when he pitched 150 innings.

Ishii's repretoire includes an 88-mph fastball, changeup, and curveball.

I think he was always going to return to Yakult, and the fact he has can only be a good thing for the Swallows.

Despite his wildness, when he's on form he's as good as any starter in Japan. I remember the way he mowed down Kintetsu's batters in the 2001 Japan Series - truly a sight to behold.

The only possible fly in this ointment is whether or not he still has the motivation levels after his 4 years in the U.S. Let's hope that he has.

Ishii signed a deal worth 600 million (6.0-oku) yen for 2 years. [Full Japan Ball Story]

Ishii should be interesting to watch, and should be great if he stays healthy.

I would think that after a mostly undistinguished MLB stint and an ignonimous departure, he has plenty of motivation to show his stuff. Are you saying he went soft in the U.S.?

I'm just saying that now he's back in little old Jingu after the "glamour" of the MLB he may not be as motivated as he was in his first stint with Yakult. Back then he was playing to earn a shot at the the MLB.

Apart from the first couple of seasons in LA, I haven't really followed his MLB career too closely, and can only speak for his time at Yakult. But I do know that if he can get back to being anywhere near the pitcher he was then, he can do a good job for the Swallows in 2006.

Should be interesting to see how he does this season.

Bad enough I got to see Ishii ruin many games for my beloved New York Mets. Now he just has to return to my favorite Japanese team?!

Ugh.

When you put it that way, he sounds, well, underwhelming. Good luck to him. He cost my beloved Mets at least a few games. He was awful toward the end.
