Fighters Sign Jose Macias

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Fighters Sign Jose Macias
The Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters will sign utilityman Jose Macias to a contract. In 2005, Macias hit .254 with 1 home run and 13 RBIs for the Chicago Cubs. Defensively, Macias has played second, third, short, and all three outfield positions.

Why would the Fighters want to sign him? Macias is 33 years old and a washed up Major Leaguer. They should go after a slugger instead.

He just won the batting title in Venezuela Winter Ball hitting .405. He barely played last season so don't be fooled by his numbers.

As a die-hard Cubs fan, I can assure you that he is awful and has no talent. He's a lousy hitter with no power and no good glove anywhere. The only reason he has been in the pros the last two seasons is because Cubs manager Dusty Baker has a love for veterans.

The self-desribed Die Hard Cubs Fan title is questionable, Krishna, because Macias has been a trusted utility man for the Cubs for the past couple years. You should know these facts if you were indeed what I am. (DIE HARD and educated about the Cubs.)

But he is that, a utility man. He has a very strong glove, especially on the infield and his outfield play is decent as well. Playing everyday, I could see him play much better, too. Awful? No talent? Dang, that's just a flat out lie.

Jose Macias didn't win the batting title in Venezuela Winter League. Luis Rodriguez, the Venezuelan 3B of Minnesota Twins, won it. However, Macias played excellent baseball for the champions, Leones del Caracas, and he was a reliable hitter and fielder.

Because Kaneko doesn't have much of a bat and almost anything would be an upgrade.

My favorite quote regarding Jose Macias:

"Jose Macias is playing Gold Glove centerfield."
-Randy Smith, former Detroit Tigers GM.

This quote reflects more on Randy Smith as a GM than it does on Macias' ability as a big league ball player.
