Kevin Witt to the Golden Eagles.

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Kevin Witt to the Golden Eagles.
Kevin Witt is on his way back to Japan. This time he will be playing with The Golden Eagles. Lets hope that he plays better this time. He is a power hitter that did not show any power when he was with the BayStars in 2004.

He showed flashes of power despite limited time due to injury. He slugged .406 with 4 HRs and 7 RBI in just 25 games and 68 ABs in a season cut short by injury (if I remember right). This time Witt should help a Rakuten lineup a lot. A combo of Witt, Fernandez, and Short isn't very bad if you ask me.

He was only given 64 AB in 25 games at Yokohama, that's way too small a sample size to make a judgment.

I guess he still feels he can succeed in Japan (I see no reason to write him off completely) while perhaps admitting to himself that he's a AAAA player (he's never hit that well in the majors, especially considering that he's a 1B-DH, but he's consistently posted about .950 OPS in AAA the last three seasons there). Perhaps a shrewd move by Rakuten. But we'll see if Nomura has him on a real short leash or not (and all gaijin seem to be on real short leashes these days, not given their fair chance to succeed if they start out in a slump).

Witt did only play in only 25 games for the BayStars, but he finished the season playing for the BayStars ni-gun team (SeaRex). He was the MVP in the minors last year. If he has a good year then the Eagles could have a powerful offense.

Wow, no kidding. From the farm stats here [NPB official site], he batted .326/.377/.569 with 12 HR and 43 RBI in 50 games with Shonan. That's pretty darn good!

(I would make a joke here about how Rakuten is about as good as the SeaRex, but that wouldn't be very nice or accurate.)
