Hoshino Japan: TBA January 25
[Full Sponichi Annex Article - in Japanese]

Overview:

Senior Director for the Hanshin Tigers, Senichi Hoshino, will be skippering the Japan Olympic Team for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. However, Japan has some stiff competition in Korea and Taiwan that has to be passed this coming November to qualify for participation in Beijing. To that end, Hoshino-kantoku hopes to be announcing the first draft of his joint professional-amateur team on January 25, expecting approval from a committee of the NPB owners at the Owners' Meeting on the 24th. This team will then spend some time in camp together starting in February.

Here is a follow up to the story in English by Kyodo News Service via Japan Ball.

This article reveals that there was some objection by the NPB over Hoshino-san being named to represent Japan by the amateur organization leader without first consulting NPB (typical reaction to being left out of the loop and wanting to feel significant). NPB has since independently come to a consensus to recommend Hoshino to lead the Japanese team, to be officially finalized on January 23rd.

There's also mention of "Nagashima Japan" in 2004 and "Oh Japan" in 2006, as well as the fact that this will be the last baseball Olympic, it not being included for 2012 in London.
