Changes to the 2004 PL Playoff Format

Changes to the 2004 PL Playoff Format
The PL has voted to change its playoff format starting next year [see also this thread]. Apparently, if a team finishes the season over 5 games ahead of the second place team, this team will only have to win 2 games (on a best of 5 series) to make it to the Japan Series because the over 5-game lead at the end of the season will represent 1 credit-win before the championship series even starts. The second and third place teams will have to play a best of 3 series to decide who plays the leader for the PL championship and a place in the Japan Series against the Central League champion.

I am not sure about the 1 win credit. Short series are always unpredictible, and this will probably make it even more so.

Personally, I would prefer a best of 5 and a best of 7 games format to determine who goes to the Japan Series. There are competitive teams in the PL at about the same level that could really put on a great show during a longer playoff season. Of course, it could be argued that the downside is that PL players would be too tired to even have a chance against Hanshin (oops... I mean whomever wins the Central League in 2004). I would like to see what others think.

In terms of keeping a second-rate PL team from getting to the Japan Series, the one game edge is probably a help. It would also have the benefit of keeping a small bit of drama in the season when one team has it locked up but wants the one game edge created by a five game margin. However, it makes a tight race much less meaningful (unless 3 teams are involved) because both teams will be playing after the regular season anyway.

On the financial side, it should generate some revenue, at least for the other two teams involved. Overall, though, I don't think a six team league playing 140 games should put more than one team into a playoff, primarily because it allows much more chance of a clunker team in the Japan Series (and then maybe as championship).

Well, frankly, I think it would be a disaster for the Pacific League. The winning team would be playing up to eight extra games before they had to meet their Central League rivals in the Nippon Series. It will only work if both leagues agreed to use the same format.
