Brown-isms Sell 75,000
The Hiroshima Toyo Carp put their 2007 team calendar full of Brown-isms, analects from Brown-kantoku, on sale at the end of last October. They announced on January 9 that all 75,000 that they made have sold out. Different Brown-isms each month have proven to be quite popular, especially toward managers according to one club representative.

Can anybody translate them for us or give an example of what they may say?

Awkwardly translating from Japanese back to English, quotes that were originally made in English, two Brown-isms in the calendar are:
  • "I may be stubborn but I'm no fool."
  • "One single inch can make or break a ball game."
(By the way, a really similar quote was made by the fictional coach Tony D'Amato, played by Al Pacino, in the Oliver Stone film "Any Given Sunday.")

Bonus Brownism:
  • "There was nothing else around to throw but first base."

I'll be rooting for the Carp. It's about time they started winning. I want to see them get third place, win the playoffs, and go to the Series against Lotte.

I actually met Mr. Brown in Kansai Airport on the way back from America. He saw my Cardinals hat and chatted up a conversation with me about the team this year (turns out he's a Cards fan too). A real class guy and quick to help out a lady with a bag bigger than she was. I think he earned the team a sudden soft spot in my heart.
