Jason Johnson Signed by Seibu
It's official, Jason Johnson signs with Seibu.

I have to be honest - I don't understand this move. Perhaps at the end of the season I'll be eating my words, but I don't think so.

Put me down as another confused guy. What makes this guy different from like Gary Glover? He went 2-13 last year, right? Even Kaz Ishii did better than that.

I hear the scouting on him is he has great stuff but for some unknown reason has not produced. One thing I hear is he eats up innings and in '05 he was second in quality starts, 19. Hope he can produce for the Lions.

So I read the article on Japanball.com, and like most of you, I'm thinking "nearly $3 million U.S. for this guy?" Then I look at his Baseball-reference page and he has made $3M, $4M, and $3.5M each of the last 3 seasons. The guy always gets destroyed! And he's not even left-handed! He must have the greatest agent in the world.

Sorry, but this is money well wasted, Seibu.

As a hardcore Chiba Lotte fan, this reminds me a lot of when Kevin Beirne signed with them for 1-oku. I was confused and wondering why they signed him at all, let alone for that kind of money. It's pretty clear that he was only a compensation signing for the organization to "save face" after losing Dan Serafini to the Buffaloes. This is Seibu's way of saving face for giving up their ace. I really think this kind of stuff is a waste of money. If you're going to give money away, do it for charity.
