Giants Back Olympics

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Giants Back Olympics
Jim Allen's weekly Hot Corner this week discusses the progress being made to capture gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. But Allen-san doesn't just say that the owners have come out to support the Olympic drive, he discusses the history of the Pacific League backing international events and Central League whining about them. In fact, the PL is often leading with innovative ideas for promoting baseball while the CL takes a back seat.

Pull quote:
So in 1999, when Tsutsumi suggested sending stars to Sydney and even suspending the schedule, the CL's owners screamed and hollered. Of course, this is what CL owners always do when the PL comes up with something new.

The same happened with the playoffs. Three years ago, when the PL raised the idea, CL owners acted as if the rival league was selling baseball's soul to the devil. Well, the funny thing is that they are in business. And, though the CL once called the playoffs a joke, the PL has been laughing all the way to the bank.
Well, guess who's come up with the idea of suspending play for 10 days during the 2008 Olympics.

The Pacific league innovations have mainly been a desperate attempt to attract customers and a slavish following of MLB fashions. The playoffs are a minor thing despite the hype and their success. Pacific League team marketing models are just as bankrupt as those of the Central League teams (with the one exception in the Central League) and the innovative suggestions are a drop in the ocean. Like the Central League they are conservative and bereft of ideas.

Hyperbole aside, the Pacific League needs to think more about fundamentals and remove the perception that it is somehow being second best. Jim also comments on other aspects of baseball and makes an interesting long term analysis.
