Drug Testing Starting

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Drug Testing Starting
Japan Ball has an article disussing anti-doping measures that NPB will be taking this year. Basically, this brings NPB into line with the Olypics and other international organizations with regards to anti-doping. Offenders will go through the following phases:
  1. Reprimand
  2. Suspension for 10 or fewer regular season games
  3. Suspension for one year or less
  4. Indefinite suspension
It should be noted that team officials involved with any doping scandals may also be penalized.

Testing has started as of February 1 and will continue until November 30. Testing will occur during spring training and open-sen (pre-season games), and once the season starts, two players will be selected at random for testing after games.

Good to see NPB catching up to the rest of the sporting world regarding drug testing. But man, those penalties are weak! Just a reprimand for the first offense and if caught cheating for a second time you miss just 10 games?

They don't really regard it as a problem. Maybe their complacency will come back to haunt them and they will find they have a big problem (though I doubt this will be the case). Or maybe everyone will be found clean (more likely).

A reprimand in Japanese society, though, is not a light punishment. Anyone getting one of those can expect a lot of criticism and the team to come under pressure to take further action.
