Nori Gets Try Out With Dragons

Nori Gets Try Out With Dragons
Starting on the 15th, Norihiro Nakamura will be working out with the Chunichi Dragons to snatch up the final open slot on their 40 man roster. If Nori can even bat .250 with 20 homers, it'll make the loss of Alex Ochoa a little bit more bearable.

This comes at the same time when Nori's former teammate, Tuffy Rhodes, gets a workout with Nakamura's former team, the Orix Buffaloes. At one point, Nakamura and Rhodes were the most devastating power combo in Japan. More so than Kiyohara and Godzilla. It's a shame that two former franchise players have to basically audition for the right to even sit on the bench, but this gives both of them a chance to resurrect their careers from a couple fairly awkward falls from grace.

I know, I was thinking it was sort of funny how this might shake out if both players manage to make the respective teams.

But, what I'm curious about is: where the heck would Nori be playing on Chunichi besides being a bench player? I admit I haven't been following the Dragons' spring camp, but if I'm not mistaken, Morino seems like he'll be a good lock to continue playing third base in Tatsunami's place, Tatsunami's still around to start from time to time and pinch-hit as well, and Tyrone Woods pretty much has the first base job locked up. And there's no DH in the Central League. So where the heck does Nori fit in exactly?

I guess the Dragons could send Morino back to the outfield, but overall it just sort of doesn't make sense.

Name value, cheap investment, and there's a good chance Morino could collapse under the pressure. It's always nice to have a back up plan. There's also a chance that Lee, Inoue, and/or Hidenori won't do well in the outfield or with the bat.

Chunichi needed to do something to try and get interest in the club up, because they're one of the most unpopular teams in Japan, despite being ridiculously good. Outside of Nagoya, I don't think there are too many hardcore Dragons fans.

And here is a primary news source (Kyodo News via Japan Ball) in English about Nakamura being given a tryout with the Dragons.
