Gonzo Camp

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Gonzo Camp
The Giants picked up a true multi-tool player in Luis Gonzalez this off season. And the Asahi-Herald's Rob Smaal heads to the Giants camp in Miyazaki for the scoop on the "plethora of options" the Giants have with Gonzo.

The Venezuelan Gonzalez says that when he got to Japan, the first thing that Hara-kantoku told him was that he was expected to play second base, a position that Gonzalez had once gone 107 straight games at without committing an error. The Giants had nine second basemen in 2006, and the position was Kosaka's to lose last year. With the signing of Gonzalez, it looks like Kosaka may have done that, especially considering that Nishi was traded to Yokohama.

I know that in the past I've been critical of much of the English press' focus on the foreign players here in Japan. But Smaal-san gives a lot of good background to these foreign players that he's writing about for those of us who don't follow MLB. In that regard, his articles have been quite interesting. (It would be nice if he'd mention what's to become of Kosaka, though.)
About

This is a site about Pro Yakyu (Japanese Baseball), not about who the next player to go over to MLB is. It's a community of Pro Yakyu fans who have come together to share their knowledge and opinions with the world. It's a place to follow teams and individuals playing baseball in Japan (and Asia), and to learn about Japanese (and Asian) culture through baseball.

It is my sincere hope that once you learn a bit about what we're about here that you will join the community of contributors.
