Egusa started for Hanshin, but went off in the 2nd innings with an injury. Veteran Shinji Taninaka come on and put on a display of almost perfect pitching through the seventh inning.
Fighting Ham starter Hayato also pitched well, and both teams were scoreless through the middle stages of the game (although Hanshin had hits galore, but just couldn't capitalize on them). Then, in the seventh inning, Hanshin's Hayakawa blasted a two-run HR to see Hayato out of the attack, and Saito hit a solo HR in the following inning off reliever Ejiri.
Hanshin's young pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa, who seems to be too good for the farm but not good enough to solidify a place in the top flight, shut the Fightin' Hams out for the eighth and ninth, and that was all she wrote.
So Hanshin's farm hacks take the ni-gun "Japan Series" - can their top-team counterparts do the same?
