Lee Seung-yeop Ponders Marines' Offer
The December 7, 2003 Korea Times [Link] features a report that Lee Seung-yeop will make a decision next week on Chiba Lotte Marines' two year 400 million yen offer to play in Japan. Lee's agent, Kim Ki-joo, met Marines' general manager Kawakita Tomoichi in Tokyo. Kim said the Marines guaranteed Lee could go to the Major Leagues after two years. Lee visited Japan last week and Kim stated that "if Lee travels to Japan again, the objective will be to sign the contract."

First baseman Lee hit 56 home runs last season for the Samsung Lions of the Korea Baseball Organization.

Park Song-wu wrote in the December 11, 2003 Korea Times article [Link] that Lee Seung-yeop has accepted the Chiba Lotte Marines' offer to play in Japan for the next two years, followed by a chance to play in MLB.

Lee said he was still unsure five minutes before his press conference in Seioul on Thursday. Lee mentioned that his two-year contract will include a 100 million yen signing bonus and have a 200 million yen annual salary. Incentive bonuses will be announced next week when Lee officially signs in Japan.

Lee said that he was diappointed in not getting full respect from MLB for himself and the KBO and added that, "Even though I believe I can get the equivalent treatment from the Samsung Lions, I wanted to see my ability confirmed in Japan."
