August 16 Meetings Fruitless

Discussion in the NPB News forum
August 16 Meetings Fruitless
Both the Players and the owners held separate meetings on Monday, August 16 to discuss the future of Pro Yakyu.

The players' meeting didn't have much detail, other than their resolve to strike should the owners continue to ignore their requests for an explanation on the Kintetsu-Orix merger and other matters.

Representatives for the 12 ball clubs talked about pretty much everything other than said merger, focusing instead on their problem of merging into a single league. They discussed the problem of what to do should the players strike, but from what I've read, did not address the core issue: The Kintetsu-Orix merger beyond a status report.

The representative for Hiroshima did say that maybe they should have somebody go and discuss things with the players at the players' next meeting next Monday (August 23).

When the owners (or their representatives) meet on September 8, it will be to seal the deal between Kintetsu and Orix. The owners don't appear to even be considering not going through with this part of the restructuring. For a single league to even be considered for next year (although the Central League teams are unlikely to approve it), September 8 has become the deadline for a second merger as well.

So the future of NPB will be a typical Japanese major policy decision, in other words. When is one of the major figures going to be described as being "too ill" to take part in the final resolution of the issue?

My hopes are very low, except that a players' strike might help energize ordinary Japanese to notice they also have responsibility for making their voices heard, at work and in politics: their leaders have neither vision, decency, or common sense.
