Yagi Out to Stud

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Yagi Out to Stud
Hanshin veteran Hiroshi Yagi was dropped from the ichi-gun roster yesterday in a not-so-subtle message that he was surplus to requirements. Yagi is expected to announce his retirement at the end of the season.

Yagi, in recent years a pinch-hitting specialist (he is known as the God of Pinch Hitters among Hanshin fans) has struggled this season, putting up only half the numbers he managed in 2003. At 39, he is also apparently finding it tough to stay in physical shape. He is quoted as saying that sitting on the bench all night has meant he has lost lower-body strength, and that it takes him a long time to recover from game- and training-induced fatigue.

Rather than sending Yagi to the farm, Okada-kantoku said in today's SanSpo that he will keep Yagi with the top team, and that he will likely be re-entered into the roster at a later date.

He`s still a legend in my town, Okayama, hometown boy! Even in recent years, he was almost always given an appearance at Muscat Stadium, and he rarely let his hometown down!

Here's to a Tigers' legend! Maybe it's time to bring up some other new blood, this might encourage Kuji to think about making room for an up and coming player.

Kuji is also expected to retire at the end of this season.
