Pro Yakyu Game of the Week: 9/5

Discussion in the NPB News forum
Pro Yakyu Game of the Week: 9/5
In all likelyhood, next week's game will be cancelled due to the impending players' strike. So this will be it for two weeks.

The only game this evening is the Giants against the Tigers, the final matchup between the Kanto vs. Kansai rivals at Koshien of the season. If the chance of rain doesn't come through, I'll be live here around 6:00 pm JST. Hope to see you there.

To put it briefly, the game was rained out in the second. For what it's worth, here's the transcript, with some commentary on other games.

MODERATORS westbaystars

17:52 westbaystars: Whew. Finished the MySQL upgrade just in time.
17:52 westbaystars: I started it, then got pulled out for a walk through the park which took about an hour longer than expected.
17:53 westbaystars: Then it refused to compile with UTF-8 as the default character set (so that Korean and Chinese can be supported as well)
17:54 westbaystars: Rather than figure out what I'm missing, I went back to EUC-JP character encoding, to finish just in time.
17:54 westbaystars: Anyway, it's just about time to head over to Koshien.
17:55 westbaystars: ---
17:55 westbaystars: Top of First
17:55 westbaystars: ---
17:58 westbaystars: Santoh, the same starting pitcher as last week, if I remember correctly, starts for Hanshin.
17:59 westbaystars: The first batter he'll face is Nishi.
18:00 westbaystars: And Santoh's first pitch is a little low, but called strike one.
18:00 westbaystars: The game is underway, just at the beep of 6:00.
18:00 westbaystars: Nishi lifts the third offering from Santoh deep to left-center.
18:01 westbaystars: This is going, going, caught at the warning track, two steps in front of the fense.
18:01 westbaystars: One long out.
18:01 westbaystars: That brings up Shimizu.
18:02 westbaystars: Shimizu grounds the ball past Santoh up the middle.
18:03 westbaystars: Fujimoto grabs the ball just to the left side and behind second base.
18:03 westbaystars: He turns, throws a one bounder to first, way too late.
18:03 westbaystars: Shimizu has an infield base hit.
18:03 westbaystars: And Rhodes steps in.
18:06 westbaystars: Rhodes goes down swinging at a high fast-ball. Two outs.
18:06 westbaystars: Rhodes looks like he wants another try at that one.
18:06 westbaystars: Kokubo, batting fourth, steps in.
18:07 westbaystars: Santoh gets two quick strikes on him.
18:08 westbaystars: The third pitch is *not* a waste pitch! Kokubo reaches out and lines the ball past the right side of second base.
18:08 westbaystars: That puts runners at first and second with two outs.
18:09 westbaystars: Yoshinobu Takahashi comes up to bat.
18:09 westbaystars: He's 0 for 3 against Santoh.
18:09 westbaystars: And is quickly down two strikes, no balls.
18:09 westbaystars: The third pitch is close, ball called ball one.
18:10 westbaystars: And Santoh gets Takahashi swinging and missing at the fourth pitch, strike three!
18:10 westbaystars: That retires the Giants in the first.
18:10 westbaystars: They got a couple of hits, but nothing to show for it.
18:10 westbaystars: ---
18:11 westbaystars: Bottom of First
18:11 westbaystars: ---
18:12 westbaystars: Hayashi starts for the Giants.
18:12 westbaystars: And his first pitch to Akahoshi is low, ball one.
18:14 westbaystars: After working the count to 2-2, and having Akahoshi foul off a couple, Hayashi gets Akahoshi to ground the ball ...
18:14 westbaystars: ... right back to him.
18:14 westbaystars: The throw to first is in time, one out.
18:14 westbaystars: That brings up Sekimoto.
18:15 westbaystars: Sekimoto works the count full.
18:16 westbaystars: The shoubu pitch is swung on and missed, strike three!
18:16 westbaystars: With two quick outs, number three batting Imaoka steps in and takes strike one down the middle.
18:16 westbaystars: The next pitch is hit deep.
18:17 westbaystars: Shimizu runs over, looks up, haitta!
18:17 westbaystars: Home run!
18:17 westbaystars: Hanshin takes a 1-0 lead.
18:17 westbaystars: It was an inside and low fork ball.
18:18 westbaystars: Kanemoto comes up.
18:18 westbaystars: Kanemoto just ranked 10th in consecutive games last evening (don't remember the number off hand).
18:18 westbaystars: And also struck out the 1,000th time in his career.
18:19 westbaystars: But he lines out to the right side to end the inning there.
18:19 westbaystars: At the end of one complete, the Tigers struck first and lead 1-0.
18:19 westbaystars: ---
18:19 westbaystars: Top of Second
18:19 westbaystars: ---
18:20 westbaystars: The rain is now coming down really hard at Koshien.
18:21 westbaystars: There hadn't been any until we came back from commercial.
18:21 westbaystars: Petagine takes two strikes from Santoh to start.
18:21 westbaystars: Umbrellas open in panic all over the stands as people fish them out of their bags.
18:22 westbaystars: After taking a ball, Peta-chan swings and misses a low-outside pitch for strike three.
18:22 westbaystars: That brings up Motoki.
18:23 westbaystars: Santoh works the count full.
18:24 westbaystars: And the shoubu pitch is taken down low, ball four.
18:24 westbaystars: Motoki gets a free base, and Oda comes up.
18:24 westbaystars: Is Abe broken?
18:26 westbaystars: The rain lightened up for a little bit during Motoki's at bat, and now it's coming down in buckets again.
18:27 westbaystars: With the count 2-2, Oda is protecting the plate, fouling off a couple.
18:27 westbaystars: And now the first base umpire is calling everyone in and the tarp out.
18:27 westbaystars: We're now entering a rain delay.
18:32 westbaystars: Radio announcer is saying that the rain is coming down even harder, which is hard to imagine.
18:32 westbaystars: And that there's a 90% chance that it'll be cancelled.
18:32 westbaystars: (His non-professional weather-man opinion.)
18:36 westbaystars: ***
18:36 westbaystars: In other games ...
18:36 westbaystars: Yokohama defeated Yakult about 50 minutes before this game started.
18:37 westbaystars: Yokohama's starter Katoh pitched very well.
18:38 westbaystars: And the 'Stars took advantage of several Swallow mistakes in the sixth to turn the game around.
18:40 westbaystars: Suzuki Ken was pulled off of first base twice in the sixth (and once in the fourth, I think).
18:40 westbaystars: The second time, with the bases loaded and two outs, saw not one, but two runs cross the plate.
18:41 westbaystars: Great, agressive base running by Saeki!
18:42 westbaystars: Yokohama took the game 5-3.
18:42 westbaystars: ***
18:43 westbaystars: ***
18:43 westbaystars: It's now announced "no game."
18:43 westbaystars: ***
18:44 westbaystars: Hiroshima defeated Chunichi 6-5, a sayonara victory in the rain accourding to the announcers.
18:45 westbaystars: Lotte defeated Orix 5-3, keeping their chances for third alive as ...
18:46 westbaystars: Nippon Ham lost to Seibu 1-4.
18:47 westbaystars: Daiei, who clinched third at worst yesterday, defeated Kintetsu 6-5, holding on to their first place seed position.
18:50 westbaystars: ***
18:50 westbaystars: ***
18:50 westbaystars: Well, that's it for this evening.
18:50 westbaystars: If the owners get a case of the smarts and avoid a strike, I'll see you again next week.
18:50 westbaystars: Otherwise, it'll be two in two weeks.
18:50 westbaystars: Take care all.

Just on this, does it drive anyone else nuts that they call games due to rain so quickly here in Japan? Is there a maximum limit of rain delay before the game is called? It seems to me that they call it after 15 minutes of steady rain. Crazy!
