Pacific League Reports Record Attendance
While everyone knows that attendance numbers are fictional, the Pacific League is nonetheless reporting a new record of 10,684,000 fans through the gates in 2004, a 5.3% increase from last year's record breaking season.

Team G Attendance Avg Last Year Diff
Daiei 66 3,070,000 46,500 3,228,000 - 4.9%
Seibu 68 1,649,000 24,300 1,664,000 - 0.9
Nippon Ham 65 1,616,000 24,900 1,319,000 +22.5
Lotte 67 1,596,000 23,800 1,225,000 +30.3
Orix 65 1,415,000 21,800 1,275,000 +11.0
Kintetsu 68 1,338,000 19,700 1,433,000 - 6.6
========== === ========== ======= ========== =======
Totals: 399 10,684,000 26,800 10,144,000 + 5.3%

Lotte set a new club record with the return of Valentine-kantoku, despite finishing just at .500 and a half game in B-Class. The move to Hokkaido really paid off for the Fighters, aided by finishing with a playoff spot.

Those are just great increases! 30.3 and 22.5! How can Daiei have bad attendance, but its still 3,000,000+?
Daiei Attendance Decline

I haven't checked, but it's most likely due to playing at more third-party stadia than last year. It fluctuates year to year.

Also, they lost two games due to the strike. That's 96,000 right there, which would shave a couple percentage points off of that.

The Giants, who have a posted 55,000 for every home game (no matter how many empty seats are visible on TV), has a similar fluctuation based on the number of games away from Tokyo Dome and the sizes of such stadia.

But of course the salient point here is that the fans are not deserting NPB (or even the Pacific League) in droves, as too many journalists would like us to believe.

Well that's why they call it a ballpark figure!

Seriously though, a loss of 96,000 from 3,000,000 is around .3%, and if the clubs are working on a break-even basis based on overheads, Daiei (the ball club) should be comfortably profitable.

I would kill to see the media try and cover up the "desertion"! Thanks for pointing it out Mijow.

What a great number this season. I just heard our broadcast was saying NPB attendance was declining year by year. So their report was wrong. I hope this will continue.

But I think the NPB official site is not good enough for foreign readers. NPB needs to go international. If you click on the schedule, then you can't see October's postseason. If you click on "Nippon Series," then you can just see "The leader of Ce-League vs. the leader of Pa-League." What is that?

Which broadcast, and where?

Please let us know and we'll set them straight. That's the only way to change sloppy reporting - confront the journalists involved. I've done that on a few occasions and some have actually apologized for getting the facts wrong.

That's who will play the Nippon Series. At the time of your post, neither the Central nor Pacific League champion had been decided. Chunichi clinched a couple of days ago for the Ce-League. The winner of the Second Stage of the Pacific League playoffs will represent the Pacific League.

Hope that clears things up.

Winner of Central League against winner of Pa-League? Does that mean Central against Pacific? Impossible.
