A good strong message from NPB. This was very decisive and the punishment was sufficient. They may not get a lot right, but they certainly did here.

Gonzalez has filed an appeal against his suspension. He has argued that he did not intend to take the banned substances and that the punishment was too harsh. This is a change from his original argument he hadn't taken any banned substances.
NPB does not look likely to change their stance.

According to Sports Hochi, a report on the positive test has been turned over to the police, but the authorities are witholding comment on it right now. I assume they will just wait for Gonzalez to return home and be done with it. Gonzalez' contract with Yomiuri has been vacated.
Gonzalez appears to be claiming that the positive result might have been a result of a rheumatism medicine he was taking and reiterated that he never "intentionally" took a banned substance.
Gonzalez admitted to using "stimulants" in 2003 and 2004, but denies having ever taken greenies.
His agent is Alan Nero. I wonder if this might affect the attitude that NPB teams will take toward future clients of Nero's.

The Japan Times reports that the rheumatism medicine was already known about and was not a banned substance, so I think we can discard that explanation.

Gonzalez tested postive for clobenzorex, amphetamine, and parahydroxyamfetamine which are all on the banned substance list. Gonzalez claimed he didn't take any of the substances.
NPB Commisioner, Yasuchiko Negoro, said:Yomiuri has already said it will release Gonzalez. Gonzalez was batting .307/.357/.421 with 2 HRs and 17 RBI in 32 games and 114 ABs.
