Ichiro Surpasses .400 Mark
The press has been hyping it up for weeks, and Ichro finally came through, breaking the .400 barrier Saturday afternoon (6/10) at Green Stadium Kobe.  This marks the 11th time that a batter has been over .400 after at least 40 games (49th game in Ichiro's case) into the season.Actually, this is the second time that Ichiro has surpassed .400 after 40 games.  The first time was in his phenominal 1994 season when Ichiro broke the 200 hits in a single season barrior.  Then, Ichiro passed .400 on July 9th, 69 games into the season.  Ichiro finished the 1994 season with a .385 batting average, naturally #1.  And he's been the top Pacific League batter ever since.

Cromartie (Giants) accomplished a .400 batting average as late as August 21st, 1989, after 96 games.  This is the latest in the season that it's been done.  Cromartie finished that season with the Batting Crown with a .378 mark.

Hanshin's Bass, who passed .400 on July 16, 1986 (69th game of the season), holds the record for highest batting average at the end of the season, going 176 for 453 in 126 games for a .389 batting average.  Ichiro's 1994 .385 is tops for the Pacific League and second only to Bass.

Will the tensai ("genius") batter overtake Bass come the end of the season?  There's still a long way to go.
