Katsuaki Furuki
So what does everyone know about this young BayStar. Are his stats from this year reflective of his true skill level or just a fluke? I know he played some 3B, is this his natural position or will he spend his career at a differnt position. A first round draft pick making it to the top this quick seems good to me, though 4 walks in 100 ABs shows the need for a little work.

One hundred at bats isn't enough to really evaluate a player on. I'd have to see his minor league stats to say much except I do like the power 9 homers in 100 at bats suggests. The walks are a bit low, but that may be a young guy excited to be with the big club.

Between 2000 and 2002, Furuki hit .288/.360/.462 in 970 farm league at bats -- including an .821 OPS as a 20-year-old in 2000 -- with 35 home runs, 144 RBI, 99 BB and 255 SO.

There's one thing missing from your helpful info -- has he shown progress, or was it mostly a big year in 2000? I prefer to see the stat lines for those years to help me answer questions like that.

2000
.306/.356/.465 with 10 HR, 43 RBI, 22 BB & 81 SO in 333 AB.

2001
.272/.366/.428 with 12 HR, 50 RBI, 46 BB & 96 SO in 346 AB.

2002
.285/.358/.498 with 13 HR, 51 RBI, 31 BB & 78 SO in 291 AB.

I believe he played in 1999 as well but I can't find those numbers online.

Looking at those numbers, 2001 raises the question of injury. He was down pretty much across the board except for walks. However, he seemed to get it back plus some for 2002. These numbers would suggest that his 2002 minor league numbers might be a more appropriate rate of production to expect from him next season as opposed to the NPB 100 AB numbers. Still, those numbers are rather nice for such a young player, and I would think he should get a starting job if he hits that way.

For what it's worth, NBP-BIS has him listed as an outfielder.

Furuki has been pretty impressive in both international
play as well as the last month plus at the big club level with Yokohama. However, he has substantial defensive shortcomings. In fact, his defense is one reason why he has spent the time on the farm that he has. Takahiro Arai made 17 errors with Hiroshima to lead all third basemen in that category this season. Furuki is my odds on favorite to take that crown in 2003.

Keeping his defensive shortcomings in mind, the BayStars should just hide him at 1B or LF. That anemic offense could use all the help it can get.
