But the thing I want to know is, why not give the position to Saitoh? He's been rotting away at 2-gun forever, no matter how good he's looked during Spring - always because the Giants have a tendency to get someone to fill the hole that Saitoh should be given a chance to fill. Batting .310 in 109 games while playing a number of positions last season, Saitoh deserves a spot somewhere! (I've thought he deserved a spot somewhere since 1997.)
Anyway, compare that to Ogawarara's Fighters:
+-----------+-------+---------+---------+--------+-------------+--------+------+
| Name | Games | PutOuts | Assists | Errors | DoublePlays | Field% | Rank |
+-----------+-------+---------+---------+--------+-------------+--------+------+
| Ogasawara | 135 | 1192 | 76 | 6 | 92 | 0.995 | 3 |
| Hayashi | 17 | 66 | 9 | 0 | 9 | 1.000 | |
| Y. Tanaka | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1.000 | |
+-----------+-------+---------+---------+--------+-------------+--------+------+
There's no doubt who the more durable first baseman is. And I don't care how popular Kiyohara is. His popularity isn't what the Fighters need. A winning team is. And Ogasawara would be much more valuable to that end than Kiyohara.
If there is any thought in doing this in the Fighters' front office, I sincerely hope they rationally think about it some more. It would not be a good trade on their part.
This is a site about Pro Yakyu (Japanese Baseball), not about who the next player to go over to MLB is. It's a community of Pro Yakyu fans who have come together to share their knowledge and opinions with the world. It's a place to follow teams and individuals playing baseball in Japan (and Asia), and to learn about Japanese (and Asian) culture through baseball.
It is my sincere hope that once you learn a bit about what we're about here that you will join the community of contributors.
